Massage / JEMS for the Non Sports Person

'Move beautifully' Joanne E - JEMS (Joanne Elphinston Movement Systems)

I also specialise in Clinical Rehabilitation for the Non Sports Person.

Here, I consider, together with the client's history and thoughts, what their individual issues and needs may be from a holistic, integrated and functional perspective; as a whole person not as a symptom or a group of symptoms.

Asking the questions like:

  • Why is this structure under pressure?
  • What does their brain think is happening?

As a Massage Therapist, I help facilitate pain management and reduction as well as developing further inquiry and understanding of how a client's body and brain sees and reacts to what is happening. I do this through soft tissue massage, working on muscles, tendons and ligaments to encourage them to release, realign and stretch.

This can help relieve pain arising from trauma and injury, chronic tension, postural issues, poor technique as well as increasing the range of movement around a joint and through the body.

Being a JEMS Practitioner, I hope to encourage clients to be self-supporting, to incorporate the principles of efficient movement and to gain some exercise ideas to take with them into their lives and to maintain any changes they make. So, reinforcing any choices and experiences they have which might keep them pain free, encourage them to be more active and to enjoy the quality of life they want.

Relief from chronic tension

Chronic tension starts with tearing, over-use or overloading of a muscle for many months, or even years, before any pain is felt. Sports massage can help to break down any scar tissue or adhesions which have reduced or limited contracting or stretching.

Relief from muscle imbalance

Muscle imbalance results from the over-use of muscle and repetition of muscle activity (RSI). This can be through occupational, postural, emotional or sporting situations. They are related to your bone structure, muscle type, habitual movement patterns and sided dominance e.g. right or left handedness, as well as the demands of the activities they partake in.

Relief from joint pain

Joint pain occurs when a muscle imbalance continues for some period of time. Here the muscle imbalance can cause instability and as joints are points of weakness this may be where the imbalance shows its effects.

Testimonial

Helen has changed my life. For endless months I was struggling with back pain, due to the nature of my work (a gardener!). I had been to other professionals for help, nothing helped. When I met Helen, I felt seen and heard. She did not just ' do the massage and say "bye" ', she explained why I was having the issues and how to overcome them (and making sure I understood what she meant in clear detail). I have worked really hard on the plan Helen created for me, and I am much stronger physically and mentally, and most of all - pain free. Helen wants the best for you, and you can tell she truly wants you to feel better. I catch myself smiling a lot more, happier in my life everyday since I met Helen. I can't thank her enough. Thank you.
